| The top U.N. human rights official has called for independent investigations into possible war crimes committed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, singled out the killing of 30 Palestinian civilians in a home in central Gaza that was shelled by Israeli forces, and their alleged neglect of young, starving children whose mothers died in the attack. |

| The Gaza war (Dec 2008-Jan 2009) has produced an unusual high number of civilian casualties. More that 400 children and 100 women not counting civilian men. Accusations of war crimes by many members of the international community has made people to study the weapons and war tactics used by Israel. It soon became clear that Israel did not want to repeat the experience of Lebanon 2006 in which it took heave casualties. The result may have been a change in tactics that surfaced in the Gaza war. The result may also be more cases of war crimes. |

| EVIDENCE 4: Witnesses and expert opinion. Gaza War (Dec 2008-Jan 2009). The Israeli attacks caused widespread revulsion around the world. Scores of civilians were bearing the brunt of modern weapons in an indiscriminate bombing over Gaza. New types shells, unmanned drones and phosporous bombs caused horrific injuries on civilians. Such was the outcry that even the US had to vote for a ceasefire in the United Nations. Mass demostrations were organised around the world to stop the murder of civilians. Despite the fact that the war started just after the religious holiday of Christmas and New Year in many parts of the world thousands took part, In the end, it was only the impeding inauguration of a new American President, Barack Obama, what brought the war to an end. But many around the world perceive that something has changed in the Middle East. Never before, in a region plagued by atrocities over the decades, had a country so blatently surpassed itself and others in the conduct of inhuman war. |

| Evidence 2: Powerful Israeli mortar attack a UN school killing 30 civilians on site and 14 later in hospital. Hundreds of families were using the school to protect them from the shelling. Gaza War (Dec 2008-Jan 2009). A UN spokesman said Israel knew full well the location of the school. This is severe violation of the rules of war. Israeli military at the beginning tried to justify the attack claiming Hamas resistance were firing at Israeli position. Their spokesman Mark Regev was dispatched with a story that Hamas was guilty of a cover up and that "as we speak Hamas is removing the bodies of their people". A total fabrication because a few hours later Israeli diplomats admitted to the UN that no fire had been received from inside the school. With school case and later the shelling of a UN depot for food, medicine and clothing, some international observers were claiming the Israeli Army was out of control. The shelling of the UN depot and subsequent fire came as UN secretary general Ban-Ki Moon was in visiting Israel. |
